“The wind extinguishes a candle but fuels a fire.” Nassim Taleb
One of the worst times in my life is actually one of the greatest blessings in my life.
It was 2010 and I had suddenly lost half of my income. I had to start making tough financial decisions that affected my family.
As a lot of people were staying in their homes not paying the bank I didn’t want to live a lie.
I told my family that we’re the kind of family that lives in reality. And the reality is that a lot of the luxuries we have gotten used to in life are no longer available to us.
Nevertheless, as a family, we will conquer this hard time and be better for it.
I didn’t tell them I was having trouble sleeping racked with guilt and shame.
I didn’t tell them I was feeling like a total failure and my identity as a husband and father was shaken to its core.
I didn’t tell them I thought it shouldn’t be this hard…
Going through that struggle and not just surviving it, but actually coming together closer as a family is one of my great joys and accomplishments.
What I learned was I’m way more resilient and mentally tough than I thought I was.
Since then, my problems haven’t ever stopped.
Life continues to be one problem after another.
However, I’ve come to realize that life NEVER gets easier. I just get stronger.
As soon as I embraced the suck of life’s daily challenges they no longer seemed like hardships, but just another obstacle to overcome.
I think it’s the reason most of us love watching the superhero movies that are constantly being pumped out.
We love watching the hero overcome what seems like insurmountable obstacles.
If the obstacles were pretty easy to overcome we’d be bored to tears and leave the theatre!
It’s the same in our own lives. We NEED to overcome the daily obstacles so we can feel like superheroes in our own stories.
So today’s challenges I’ll embrace and do my best to remain mentally calm in the chaos and not wish the problem away.
I’ll take it on doing my best knowing that the game of life is just like a difficult video game and as I progress through the levels they just inevitably get more difficult. Yet, it’s so fun and rewarding getting to that higher level.
I don’t want that game to get easier. I want to remain challenged and engaged and yes it’s tougher but way more rewarding and certainly never boring!
Here’s a secret: The land business won’t ever get easier. You’ll just get better at it and then you’ll level up!
