T- Thoughts
“If we stay where we are, where we’re stuck, where we’re comfortable and safe, we die there. We become like mushrooms, living in the dark, with poop up to our chins. If you want to know only what you already know, you’re dying. You’re saying: Leave me alone; I don’t mind this little rathole. It’s warm and dry. Really, it’s fine.
When nothing new can get in, that’s death. When oxygen can’t find a way in, you die. But new is scary, and new can be disappointing, and confusing - we had this all figured out, and now we don’t.
New is life.” ― Anne Lamott
I’ll admit it… I have low frustration tolerance for problems. When I feel like I’m not being productive on my big goals for the year or not spending enough time in places that are important to me like my health or relationships may be a software service I feel stuck and it’s a terrible feeling.
I created a three-part framework I wanted to share on how I work my way into feeling unstuck.
First, it’s normal to feel stuck. We all feel like that at some point. If you’re feeling that way now congratulations you’re a human being. What’s not all right as an entrepreneur is to stay in that space.
Let’s climb out of the hole together with this framework.
#1. Plan
#2. Rest
#3. Get Perspective
First I plan. Maybe I’ll look at my compass worksheet and remind myself of my big goals for the year or quarter. Often, if I just reorganize my calendar I feel better. So prioritizing what is most important for me for that week to achieve allows me to move forward with total clarity. It feels so much better than having the world dictate my day. A great mantra is “organization before execution.” Reevaluate your plan = getting unstuck much faster.
Second I rest. I mean really rest. I need some distance from the problem and I want my unconscious to solve it for me. I learned this technique from the famous chess champ Josh Waitzkin from Searching for Bobby Fischer. Around 4:00 pm he’ll write down what problem he wants to solve. Then, he’ll simply forget or not think about it again until the next morning.
Often, when I do this, I’ll wake up the next day and the possible solutions or THE solution becomes crystal clear. Voila unstuck!
Third I get perspective. Whenever I’m stuck with a business problem I’ll call one of the coaches or even Rossi our Chief Problem Solver to challenge my thinking or offer up different perspectives. It NEVER fails to get me unstuck.
We have the best community on the planet. If you’re not in our coaching program, tap the community and get some perspective on an issue you’re having to help you get unstuck.
For personal issues, I’ll call a good friend. It’s that simple.
Test out my three-part framework for yourself and email me if you found it helpful!
“Often people talk about how they feel ‘stuck’ in a situation. You’re never stuck! You may be a little frustrated, you may not have clear answers, but you’re not stuck. The minute you represent the situation to yourself as being stuck, though, that’s exactly how you’ll feel. We must be very careful about the metaphors we allow ourselves to use. ” Tony Robbins

TIP OF THE WEEK
Mark: For this week’s tip, I’ve discovered a software engineer, Garrett Spong who gave Tate and me an incredible tip in Jamaica. It’s an app called Signal. Garrett works in the security industry, it turns out that those messaging apps are not so secure. This is end-to-end encryption, you can do lots of different things. You can verify who you are chatting with. Signal is a cool app, it does everything that iMessage does, but it has phenomenal security encryption.
