T- Thoughts
“Each of us must confront our own fears, must come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives. To experience adventure or to be limited by the fear of it.”–Judy Blume
I’ve been afraid of a lot of things in my life. From my parent’s disapproval to asking a girl out on a date, to quitting a good stable job to start my own business. Fear is just embedded in every exciting moment in the fabric of life.
But there was one moment that I was so fearful of I can still feel it viscerally when I think about it. It was in a Las Vegas hotel room in the summer of 2013.
I had planned my first live Land Geek BootCamp and I had 50 confirmed customers flying in from all over the country to hear me speak for 2.5 days about land investing. The worst part was one of the attendees was flying over 18 hours from Sydney Australia.
I listened to my heartbeat in agonizing fear and watched my mind cycle and swirl all night and all morning trying to prepare a talk I couldn’t prepare for mentally.
I felt a sense of responsibility to deliver an outstanding and valuable presentation to the folks who were making the investment to spend that weekend with me learning. I didn’t have any confidence I could deliver as I’d never done it before.
Nevertheless, bleary-eyed and fueled on pure fear and adrenaline I went through my slides and taught module after module. To my surprise, it went well and my confidence grew for the next Bootcamp! In fact, for the next one, I slept a full FOUR hours compared to zero… Progress!
Fear and excitement are really just the same feelings. Think about a time you conquered fear, I bet you don’t regret it.
Ryan Holiday wrote an amazing article about 15 ways to overcome the fear that’s killing your potential. It’s definitely worth a read. Fear Article
I think what helps me the most now with facing my fears is just getting that fear out of my head and onto paper. Then it’s no longer something just swirling undefined in the background of the mind. Once it’s in the light so to speak I can actually deal with it.
“He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.”–Ralph Waldo Emerson
