T- Thoughts
“What is success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; that is to have succeeded.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
I remember being in therapy and complaining I couldn’t feel happy about all my new success. My parents were proud of me and bragging about how well I was doing in the land business. My friends were congratulating me and would make comments about how they wished they could just hike on a random Monday in the middle of a beautiful day in Scottsdale. Yet, I was numb.
My therapist told me something that I found so profound. The skills needed for success were completely different than the skills needed for happiness. She said I had developed the requisite skills to achieve my goals in business. I had self-discipline, grit, focus, work ethic, and a love for doing deals. What I was missing were the required skills for happiness.
I complained. I thought once I was “successful” all my problems would be solved. I’d feel great. I’d feel accomplished. I’d feel important and loved.
She said, you accomplished your goal and that’s great, but accomplishing big goals is really hard. While you’re doing these things you’re uncomfortable and going on an emotional rollercoaster month after month not knowing if you’ll get to the top of the mountain you’re climbing or not. Once you get there it feels empty… Unless…
Unless what I asked? Unless along the way I had developed different skills for happiness. Gratitude for what I already had, peace of mind, a sense that there was nothing I needed to improve in each moment.
So, I developed a mindfulness practice, a gratitude practice and continue each day to work on both skills simultaneously.
Success won’t shield me from the really hard things in life. The death of a parent or loved one, losing my health, or a terrible accident. Money only solves money problems.
I think having total clarity that happiness and success are not even close cousins to each other will help you when you reach your goals and realize that all that hard work won’t actually make you happy.
Or being completely content with what you have, but constantly stressed out about solving money problems is not a great formula for living your best life either.
You want both and they’re both skills to work on daily and completely within your control.
“Success isn’t measured by money or power or social rank. Success is measured by your discipline and inner peace.” Mike Ditka
