“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain
Do you ever feel stuck? Sometimes when faced with a complex problem or task I’m just overwhelmed by it. My mind starts doubting itself and with a lack of conviction or clarity I just procrastinate. Maybe I’ll take a long walk and think through the problems. Inevitably, at some point, I just start mentally beating myself up and saying I’m lazy or just unmotivated which is unhelpful.
Today, I just felt stuck with a new big project I want to start and went through a new decision matrix.
I ask myself the following questions:
What are my beliefs about this project?
What skills am I bringing to the table for this project?
What traits do I need to have to complete this project?
In order to be ultra-effective I think I need all the necessary beliefs, traits and skills.
That is, do I believe I can accomplish this project? Belief can start getting woo woo, but if your beliefs are limiting you i.e. I don’t really think this will work, etc. You’re dead in the water.
Next is am I the kind of person to complete this task? Do I have the necessary traits. How often do you start a project and you need to be a certain kind of person and you’re just not that person yet. Maybe you need to be more patient to accomplish the goal. Maybe you need to learn how to lead better and delegate to grow.
Finally, you may not have the skills. Acquiring the skills of how can I do this or even better WHO can do this solves the skill issue.
So, next time you get stuck ask yourself about any limiting beliefs, do you have the traits needs to accomplish this goal, and do you have the requisite skill sets?
“The stars will never align, and the traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same time. The universe doesn’t conspire against you, but it doesn’t go out of its way to line up the pins either. Conditions are never perfect. ‘Someday’ is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you. Pro and con lists are just as bad. If it’s important to you and you want to do it ‘eventually,’ just do it and correct course along the way.” Tim Ferriss
